It is summertime in South Carolina, which means many of us will be heading to mountains, lakes, and beaches in addition to simply spending more time outside. This makes it particularly important to remember that sun exposure is one of the biggest causes of premature aging. The care you take of your skin every day can help reduce your risks and keep your skin looking youthful and healthy for years to come.
You can help limit UV damage to your skin by:
- Using a sunscreen with a higher SPF. Sunscreen should be reapplied after sweating or swimming, or after every two to three hours spent in the sun
- Wearing protective clothing. Long sleeves and pants, hats, and sunglasses can all help protect sensitive skin from harmful UV rays
- Limiting time outdoors in midday. Try to schedule your outdoor time to avoid the midday sun. Make sure, if you are outdoors during that time, to wear sunscreen and protective clothing
Of course, even your best efforts may not fully be able to prevent sun damage. If your skin is sun damaged or prematurely aged, Greenwood plastic surgeon Dr. Ted Vaughn can help.
